Welcome to Antigonish!
The town of Antigonish is located along Highway 104 in eastern
Nova
Scotia, near the bridge crossing to
Cape
Breton Island. Many people know Antigonish as the home of
St.
Francis Xavier University, a 4500-student institution that has been recognized
as one of the top universities in Canada by MacLean's Magazine. The town, which
was incorporated in 1889, is steeped in rich history, which can be discovered
at the museums and historic sites around the town. Most notable of these sites
is the
Antigonish
Heritage Museum, which is located in the former CN Station. Both first-time
and seasoned visitors to the Maritimes should head to the local
lighthouse,
located on Cape George. For an outdoor experience, visit one of the local parks
or beaches. This town is the location of the famous
Antigonish
Highland Games, a three-day Scottish-themed extravaganza that features piping,
drumming, dancing, throwing and much more, all of which can and should be done
while donning a traditional kilt. The games are extremely popular and have earned
Antigonish the reputation as the 'Highland Heart' of
Atlantic
Canada.
